In the wild Valdivian rainforest of the Patagonia region which stretches from southwest Chile into Argentina, we find a true treasure of the forest – the coveted Maqui berry (pronounced ‘mah-kee’). This present-day region of Patagonia is home to indigenous inhabitants known as the Mapuche, with Maqui being one of their staple foods over thousands of years. Maqui was known as a symbol of strength, perserverance, peace and benevolence to the Mapuche. Mapuche warriors would consume Maqui before going into battle for strength and vigor, and to this day are the only undefeated indigenous people of South America. While ranking higher than most superfruits on the ORAC scale – Maqui is one of the most antioxidant rich foods on the planet and can contain orac values of three to four times more antioxidant potential than blueberries, blackberries, or raspberries – and even higher than most superfruits such as Goji berry! Modern day research on Maqui berry and its purple pigment group – anthocyanins – demonstrates possible usefulness in medicinal areas such as modulating inflammation, supporting eye health, aiding blood sugar, protecting from heart disease, IBS, promoting a healthy microbiome and supporting anti-aging effects.
